In our understanding, design thinking is based on cognitive processes typically employed by designers.\u00a0It is considered as a creative thinking process comprising several levels: analytical, creative, goal- and people-oriented thinking and working.<\/p>\n<p>A design mindset is not problem-focused, it is solution focused. Design thinking explores possibilities of what could be, and creates desired outcomes that benefit the end user.<\/p>\n<h2>Failing\u00a0for Success<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/9780061766084\/change-by-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brown<\/a>\u00a0lists the following characteristics of a design thinker: empathy, integrative thinking, optimism, experimentalism, and collaboration. So, to include design thinking in innovation projects, we should run through five\u00a0phases (see figure): Empathizing,\u00a0defining,\u00a0ideating,\u00a0prototyping,\u00a0testing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_579\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-579\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-579\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.phzh.ch\/zhe\/files\/2016\/12\/Grafik_Design_Thinking.jpg\" alt=\"5 processes of design thinking\" width=\"450\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.phzh.ch\/zhe\/files\/2016\/12\/Grafik_Design_Thinking.jpg 621w, https:\/\/blog.phzh.ch\/zhe\/files\/2016\/12\/Grafik_Design_Thinking-300x260.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure: 5 processes of design thinking<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ol>\n<li>With <strong>empathizing<\/strong>, the goal is not\u00a0to emotionally invest but to objectively uncover and understand as many viewpoints as you can.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>defining<\/strong> phase is about identifying user needs and institutional requirements. Knowing that you\u2019re tackling the right problems while involving your customer early in the process is what is most valued here.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ideating<\/strong>\u00a0means\u00a0brainstorming as many ideas as possible and not judging them yet. While silly, absurd, bland, risky and utopian notions are generated, suddenly realizable and\u00a0innovative ideas arise among them.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>prototype<\/strong>\u00a0is some type of model or sketch. It is a way to convey an idea quickly to test users.<\/li>\n<li>The goal of <strong>testing<\/strong> is learning\u00a0what works or does not work for the users,\u00a0and then iterate. Iterating means modifying\u00a0the\u00a0prototype based on feedback \u2013 until the user experience is satisfying.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Bottom line of this process: It is better to fail early and often as prototypes are created \u2013 and to learn from the failures until successful models or prototypes are established. (See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dschool.stanford.edu\/groups\/k12\/wiki\/17cff\/Steps_in_a_Design_Thinking_Process.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institute of Design at Stanford<\/a>\u00a0for more information.)<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wiki_unbold\">Conference on Design Thinking in Z\u00fcrich<\/h2>\n<p>In January 2017, a half-day\u00a0conference on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phzh.ch\/zhe-kurztagung\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00abCreativity in Learning \u2013 Revolutionizing Teaching through Design Thinking\u00bb<\/a>\u00a0will be held at PH Z\u00fcrich. At this opportunity,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucd.ie\/conway\/research\/researchers\/conwayfellowsa-z\/professorsuzannejarvis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Suzi Jarvis<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.innovators.ie\/colman-farrell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colman Farrell<\/a>\u00a0from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.innovators.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Innovation Academy<\/a>, University College Dublin, will be our guests. We have asked them about their views on creativity and design thinking as well as how they are planning to approach the conference in Z\u00fcrich.
